"NICE TRY" Christmas craft

HAPPY SITSMAS DAY !!....Head over to "The secret is in the Sauce" and check out their big day of prizes every hour. The grand prize is a $200 Target gift card!...and get in on the bloggy loveathon!♥♥♥

Every now and then I see something in a magazine and think to myself......Hey I could make that!!! Yeah...let's just say that "reality" isn't my strong suit. So I was thumbing through a lovely little periodical and saw this picture. And those dreaded words popped out of my big old stupid mouth. So in a moment of insanity I headed off to Michael's and bought ..........

The magical makings of a crafty disaster. Oh but in my sad little overwrought brain I wasn't thinking disaster....I was thinking sparkly, fuzzy, magical thoughts. I was thinking that I was channeling Martha Stewart. I was blissfully out of my mind.

I started out slowly.....making sure that I didn't halfass this project. For I was sure this one was gonna be the one that put me on the map....this one was gonna be the one Craft project that actually worked. I was even going to record this masterpiece in digital glory!

And then reality reared it's ugly head.......... My base was too small (I stole it from my newly acquired cloche).....my birds were without feathered finery.....and my ornaments didn't dazzle. .....

And let's not even discuss the "tree things".

In the words of my (soon to be sleeping in the garage) hubby......"Nice Christmas shrubbery"

But am I dismayed?....have I given up this kooky notion that I am a crafting diva? NAY I SAY! On to the next project................

Well..I think that you are too hard on yourself! I think it looks kinda whimsical-ish..lol..better than I could do!

Shannon said...

Happy SITSmas Day to you!

I am soooo not crafty at all. I'd have given up about halfway and declared it to be the dumbest idea I'd ever had... until the next issue of Good Housekeeping or Family Circle arrived, that is!

ko said...

IT LOOKS GREAT! :) you did a wonderful job! MAN I hope it isnt as cold there as here...Your hubby will freeze! HAHAHA! I love that wreath!! :) I cant wait to see how that turns out!! WE FOUND JACKSON!

Swirl Girl said...

I think you did an awesome job!
I wouldn't have even attempted it in the first place!

Not the crafter, but I am crafty!

Anonymous said...

It looks just like the photograph so if you aren't happy, it is the fault of the designer not yours. The trees unusual and not your standard Christmas fare but the ornaments look great. Maybe you could just lose the trees.

I love the wreath and hope it turns out for you. I very seldom try anything crafty unless it's using Photoshop. My calling in life is to PURCHASE and admire other craft divas creations. It keeps the world balanced.

tam said...

Hey I actually think it is a fine interpetation of the inspirational piece! Good luck on that gorgeous wreath!!!
~Tam :)

I kinda like it Nikki, just give those trees a spoonful of miracle grow and they will be perfect! okay! okay! I am already on my way to the garage.

Not being a crafter myself, I am impressed with your centerpiece. Enjoyed reading your hysterical take on it though. laurie

You are so funny, girl! You had me thinking an epic disaster was forthcoming. LOL I love the centerpiece!

Tootsie said...

"shrubbery"??? did I even spell it right? I am laughing at him! lol

I think it looks just fine...we are all too critical of ourselves...if it doesn't look exactly like I picture it in my head it is NEVER good enough! I think it is perfect! and you will always have the memory of his comment!

Tootsie said...

by the way...I tried a few years back to make that wreath...good luck! I used hot glue and wire...DO NOT USE HOT GLUE! you will not be happy!
good luck! and I hope you will post and tell me how you won!

I think it looks great - the Christmas shubbery of yours. Cannot wait to see your next project! I have to restart mine as well. Thanks for the inspiration.

Been there done that. Never turns out quite right for me either. Oh and the wreath thingy. Takes a long time and lots of balls. Sometimes it is cheaper to buy then make. lol. I have given up on Martha S. She doesn't like to share channel herself and i am mad at her.... mishelle

From here it looks good! I like those but I don't think I could make it. I want to see your wreath if you make it. It looks pretty!
Thanks for the kind words you left. You have also been tagged. You probably have this one already but I am running short on people (work with me):)
Happy Merry SITSmas!

Belle (from Life of a...) said...

I'm kind of touch and go with the crafty stuff too. I WANT to be good at it but lots of times I'm just all thumbs. THEN...when I least expect it...something turns out great...therefore I continue to craft.

Heather said...

I want....another....SHRUBBERY!

Oh, sorry, got a little carried away there - not enough sleep plus huge opening for a Monty Python reference = impossible to resist. :D

I think the craft turned out well; far better than anything I could've done! Can't wait to see the wreath....!

Merry SITSmas, Happy Holidays and CHEERS!

(oh and ps - something is finally on its way to a certain canine member of your family... should arrive today or tomorrow!)

Unknown said...

You crack me up! If I hadn't seen the original picture I wouldn't know the differences between the two. I've got a project to tackle over here that is bird related. We'll see if it turns out as well as yours.

Unknown said...

I don't see what's wrong with it, although I personally would bling out the trees more and maybe mix the ornaments in the 2 groups. I think it's very elegant!

Darlene said...

Hi Nikki,

I think you did a great job!!! Those projects never seem to be as easy as they look....lol

Anonymous said...

hahaha I am laughing at this because I was trying to have my own "Martha Moment" yesterday! I made a trip to Michael's and attempted to craft some Christmas cheer. I even blogged about it! Oh well! I think your crafts look beautiful....honestly...you are being way too hard on yourself :-)

Hi Nikki...I'll give you a pat on the back for even attempting to make it...to me it looks very much like the picture...and the stylists get paid the big $$ to do theirs...Cheers! ;-) Bo

I do hope you keep them out because they're cute, and you know all those dumb periodicals are photo shopped to death, don't you. Yep, they just cut/paste the finery and dazzle. :)

No, no, Nikki, don't do it! If you ever get the "handle" on crafting, then you'll be perfect, and where oh, where does that leave ME?

Laura said...

Don't be so hard on yourself! Maybe get some of those tiny silver balls and add them to the trees. I can't wait to see your finished wreath. Nothing like starting small with the projects - LOL!

Kelly Deneen Raymond said...

lol. You are hilarious! Okay, so it doesn't look exactly like it does in the magazine, but it's not too bad! ;)

Merry SITSmas!

Laura Marchant said...

Seriously, it looks good enough for me. I am always like this with baking things. I see a cake and think or I could do that. You should have seen the year I tried to decorate my cookies on a stick...yep talent I have not got!

Laurie - Decorating Fanatic said...

Oh! I was laughing out loud on this one - NOT at your adorable little topiaries - they turned out great! but because your commentary has rambled through my brain at one time or another. Yes, I have tried to channel Martha - thinking that "Oh this will be it! I will be able to mass produce this {fill in blank} craft and make tons of money!" Glad I am not the only one who does that! But seriously, I think yours turned out really pretty! I have that same magazine and I would love for someone to tackle that wreath project. I am sure it is "oh so simple"! ;) ~ Laurie

Anonymous said...

Was yesterday National Michael's Day or what? I was there too... surprised I didn't bump into the rest of you ladies there... lol I wandered around in circles trying to decide what crafty items to buy and make, but then went into a menopausal sweat, left the basket sitting there with my stuff in it and headed outdoors to look for a snowbank to cool myself off in... But I forgot.. we haven't had any snow yet.

Salmagundi said...

I'm not so great at the crafty stuff either, unless it involvs a needle and thread. We keep trying, though - that's the great part!! Sally

I've given up on channeling Martha - now I just leave it all at the store and admire it from afar :)

I can't get Mr. Linky to work either - so I'm clicking on comments :)

I'm lovin' your Christmas shrubbery! You should toss a few of those silver icicles on them to give them that "festive" look:)

I desperately want to be a craft diva; but, alas, it just isn't in the cards....

Jan said...

You are being way to hard on yourself. Send it my way. I love it Nikki. Mine would turn out more like a barnyard scene. I know it. Keep us updated on all the attempts at your crafty talents for Christmas. Really cute.

There's no way I could have pulled of anything CLOSE to that. I think it is a perfectly respectable craft project. :)

And PALEESE teach me how to make that ornament wreath in that picture! Cant wait to see how you do it.

Anonymous said...

Marvelous! Failed craft projects almost make for such funny blog-fodder that it's almost worth it (not that it looks that bad). I recently tried to make a felted hat for my FIL as a Christmas gift... It shrunk so much that it didn't even fit my kids! Now it's a basket. Good luck with your future projects!

Nikki, I'd be proud to create something that looked even remotely like that. Full credit for having the enthusiasm to even attempt it - and it keeps the fingers flexible ready for blogging.

Then feeling guilty about money spent...Id stash it away in some closet where it would continue to haunt me for years to come*sighs* Did I mention that my closets are dangerous? Anyhoo BIG bonus points to you for making it work for ya! *winks* Vanna

Girl I give it to ya for the effort and yes my hubby would definitly be "out" with the shrubbery cause he would've said the same thing, LOL!!!!

Since you are so in need of comments(jerk) I have another one. Martha Stewart just called and suggested you cut that tall one down(from the bottom) and make it closer to smaller one's size. But a tad taller. I told Martha to mind her own business-that you were Nikki Crumpet. But then she offered me homemade apple pie and I caved.

When I was in Las Vegas last month, I went into Michaels and had a cart full of stuff. I walked around forever, then put everything back, because I remember all my past mistakes of trying to copy something. Got their 40% off coupon and went and bought something premade. LOL
