~~GLANCING WITH THE STARS~~

First the set up of my story..........

A few years ago, my DH decided we REALLY needed a new place to watch TV. His reasoning was that if we finished off the space above our three car garage it would give us a place to put not only the television, but also our computer desks. That way if someone wanted to watch TV and someone wanted to be on the computer...we could still be together. So our empty attic space became...a computer/tv room.

We already owned a perfectly functional large Television that was in our family room downstairs...I ,being a smart and frugal woman, assumed that we would just move this television upstairs and call it good. I was actually excited to not have this behemoth in my family room any longer....gee this idea of his was starting to really make sense!
But "man brain" tells me that there is no way that the two of us could possible move such a big TV up the stairs and down the long hallway without the possibility of damaging it....and then there is the fact that it isn't an HD television, and the fact that we probably should have 2 TV's just in case we both had a show on we wanted to watch...

So off we go to Circuit City...Me, with a somewhat ornery woman face...he with a glowy-i'm-gonna-buy-electronics man face. We agreed on the ride over that a 42" TV was more than adequate for the somewhat narrow space we had to work with. Since I don't know diddlysquat about TV's I browsed while he shopped. He calls me over after a few minutes and points out a lovely 48" High Def TV.

woman brain: "gee honey that's bigger than we planned"

man brain: yes, but it's really nice and I think it's a better deal for the money.

ok...I understand a bargain. Sure why not...48" it is! I naively start to stroll towards the front of the store ....

man brain: OH HONEY...come look at something.

woman brain: uh oh

man brain: wow look this 52" TV is on sale...it's only a few dollars more than the 48" and it has such a clear picture...Just think how great PROJECT RUNWAY will be on this TV. (The man is no dummy)

woman brain: logic always makes me hot....lets buy it and go home.

So off I go to the car...happy that my baby is happy. Two days later........... doorbell rings....the circuit city dudes are here to hook up our new TV. I let them in.....they bring in the strangely LARGE box...and on the side I read....Toshiba 64" TV.

woman brain: (dials phone and gets hubby at work.) "hey honeyluvbunny.....I think they brought the wrong TV. The one that's here is 64".

man brain: I can explain...........

So here it is....our big freaking TV...after a few days of having my retinas singed from sitting so close...I resign myself to watching my favorite shows in LIFE SIZE pictures.

One year and a few months later.....I notice a couple of odd little bright spots on our TV... I ask man brain what could they be? He doesn't know but is sure it's nothing to worry about. Over the course of the next week or so...said spots seem to multiply and some of them are growing.

Man brain decides to do some Internet research on Toshiba TV's like the one he purchased....and ,I might add, purchased WITHOUT an extended warranty.

TOSHIBA: sometimes in TV's of this model...the small interior mirrors have been known to not remember to spin and can cause small bright spots on the screen.

WHAT???? $3600 and a year later the mirrors are forgetting to spin??? For that kind of money those mirrors not only better remember to spin....BUT THEY BETTER MAKE ME BUTTERED POPCORN AND MAKE ME LOOK THINNER!

So here is what we have... HMMM is that lint on his suit...

Let's take a closer look.......
Let's view it with the picture off shall we.....

Yes people...we are now the proud owners of our own TOSHIBA GALAXY!

AND DO I HAVE AN OFFER FOR YOU!!!!! For a low low price (and only for the next 30 minutes) We will be offering you the opportunity of a life time. How frustrating that must be. I too have a BIG TV it sits in my husbands office which I call the cave.

If I buy a star do I get a certificate to frame and keep forever?

Ok, I must admit, I'm a man when it comes to electronics. The bigger, the better. I was just as excited as my husband when we got our huge HD a few years ago. Giddy, in fact!

That really stinks about the bright spots! Good that you seem to have a sense of humor about it!

Jan said...

Love the story, but I am struck by how lovely your room is. I love love love it.

Okay now for the electronics dept.
I know the whole man/woman brain differences. Urr.. We love logic and they love size and power. But look at where it go him. Into outer space. That does look like a new galaxy of some sorts. That is the only thing to laugh about here. Sorry about that. But he is going to have to be your slave for quite awhile now right. You can't let him completely off the hook here.

Heather said...

I read this post to my husband and he thought your husband might have been a genius until I got to the part about the spots and no warranty and he said, "Uh oh, did she kill him yet?"

Mom said...

I would be making several calls, sending letters and e-mails to Toshiba until they fixed it. Maybe if enough people complain they wil be forced to do a recall.

As far as a Toshiba Star, I'll take the only one that's in the yellow area.

Don't you like galaxy watching?? This story sounds all to familiar and too real to me. I think you should craigslist your stars...

Hi Nikki...I'm glad you cleared that part up about the spots being "stars"...I thought it was DANDRUFF...oh, what a heartbreak this predicament is, but at least you have the other one in the family room to watch Project Runway on... Nikki, I didn't even see the TV I was so busy loving those lamps. I remember when you posted MY HUSBAND'S FREAKIN' BIG TV on RMS. That was hilarious. The galaxy... not so much. I'd get a Darth Vadar mask and sit there and watch TV... see if he notices. Welcome to a galaxy near you! Carol

Been there...done that...I'm still laughing, but aren't these men a piece of work. We never had "stars" on our Sony set but the Boss was one of the first in the neighborhood to own a big screen years and years ago. Every year we had to spend a miniumum of $400. to keep it running. We finally sold it to some other idiot. Now the husband is happy with our normal size nothing fancy fits in our armoire big back t.v....Now if I could just get him to sell the Harleys.....

Lilly said...

That is the most hilarious post I have ever read. And that is one GIANT TV. Oh I hope they can find a cure for its disease!

I have to say you have penned the best line ever, 'me, with a somewhat ornery woman face...he with a glowy-i'm-gonna-buy-electronics man face'.

Still laughing, let us know what happens with the TV. Nothing is built to last anymore is it?

Nikki, True, it's a bummer about your TV. I sure hope ours doesn't do that. But, I love your room. What a great space!!!

Oh jeez! This was so hilarious (the part about the stars, that is) otherwise downright sad! I love big TVs and I could just immerse myself in one like yours!

And I would be crushed to know it wasnt perfect in every way. But your sense of humor carried you through it with flying colors! God knows how bad hubby must already feel!

I'd love to have a star named after me! lol!!!!

LOL. I Love this story. You can name my star Susie. Or maybe LOLA for my naughty side.
At least you have a sense of humor about it. Poor hubby - he tried so hard. You know men; the bigger the better...they don't care if it works as long as it's big and impressive.

Heather said...

Okay, first of all, totally jealous that you have a space for both computers and TV. Back in our pre-kid days, we had exactly such a room. Not nearly so grand, but we had a smaller (like the same size as my 6 year old computer monitor) TV with cable in the office, so I could surf the net while watching American Idol or something else like that that didn't require paying rapt attention, and Hubby could watch sports and be online.

Then, Kiddo was born and the office turned into the nursery and the guest room turned into that worst of hyphenates: the guest room-office. :P No room for a TV in there (and it got stolen shortly after Kiddo was born anyhow). Hubby has no big problem with this anymore, as he has a laptop with a wifi set-up so he can be online and watch TV downstairs. Me? With the Flintstones-era PC? Not quite.

So, to sum up this long-n-rambly comment, I am making it a requirement of our next house that we have an actual office, and that the actual office has room for a TV. Not necessarily a Toshiba Ginormo, mind you, but a TV with cable. And possibly a DVR.

Hi Nikki
We have a room above our garage that the seller called a bonus room...the shape looks just like yours! But I need to work on getting it decorated! Yours looks great!

We would love to have a big tv there!

Anonymous said...

ohhhh, yucky. Im sorry. But I think Im going to need one of those stars! I have always wanted a star named after me!! hehehe, that part made me laugh! You are soo creative! So no extended warranty huh? My mom works for Circuit City as assitant to the CEO, she deals with problems similar to this one. I will ask her what she thinks! Sorry though that sucks! I HATE when electronics do things like this!

Seriously funny stuff!
My husband and I did the same thing...went in for a small flat-screen, ended up with a HUGE flat-screen and a new sound system to support it...plus HD plugins for the Wii, and DVD player, etc. I feel your pain. Although, if we start seeing stars (other than the actor/actresses on TV) I'll be quite ticked.

Anonymous said...

Oh, Nikkiness! I'm so sorry about Star Trek stars being all over your TV screen!! Even though it's horrible, you do tell a very funny story!! My Mr. Precious had to have one of those xlarge screens! He bought the warranty!! He never does, but with that TV he did!

Your story was so right on. I just dont get it. Buying electronics is the most amazing thing a man could do with his time. My husband has spent about 16 kazillion hours on the phone with Direct TV this fall getting our package JUST RIGHT so he could watch every single NFL game known to man in HDTV. What?!?!

I LOVE the color of that room, by the way.

Michael said...

Oh, Nikki honey...let's chat us up some TVs, shall we. Way back in 2001, I spent a small fortune on a 32 inch Sony Wega TV (the old school kind that weighed like 200 pounds) and honestly, I loved it so much that Jay and I bought a 57 inch Sony HDTV big screen for our great room a year later (it's rear projection...LCDs and plasmas were still like $8k at the time.) So Jay and I are watchin' Law and Order one night (cause we're totally old like that) and the big screen picture turns green. Everybody looked like Kermit the Frog. It was literally about 3 months old. OK, no big deal...we bought the extended warranty. They come out and replace the freaking picture tube. But life was good again.

Except then the 32 inch TV shuts off on its own one night and that was it. Done. It was so anti-climatic. No warranty on this one, so we replaced it with a Phillips model. That lasted about 2 years. Thank gosh I bought the Phillips at Costco before they changed their return policy and the store took it back and gave a full refund.

So I'm now on a 32 inch Sony Bravia LCD flat panel for the bedroom TV. I swore I'd never own another Sony product, but I have to admit the picture is phenomenal. I don't have high expectations though.

And just to add to the drama, the big screen in the great room now has blue lines running through the picture. Seems the picture tubes have come out of alignment...cause they're totally finicky like that. That's only a couple hundred to fix though. Beer money.

If you wanna talk laundry, I've got some stories there too. Let's just say that the whole Maytag dependability people slogan is a bunch of big time crapola.

And Frigidaire Gallery refrigerators blow too. One month after the extended warranty expired...how convenient was that???

(Sorry for the rambling vent...every appliance and just about every major electronic in our home was purchased brand new when we moved here in 2002, yet this is what I've dealt with. I can so sympathize with your frustration!)

We have a new TV that was a real pain to get all the way upstairs. Guess what? It didn't take a year, just one day for it to not show the picture on the screen unless you use the remote to turn on. Did we take back? Oh heck no, it's too flippn' big to take down the stairs again. I think it will stay with the house or just get a heave ho out a window. Wait, there isn't a big enough window. Hi Nikki - MY DH had to have a TV so BIG that we've got a projection screen TV. That puppy projects onto a screen that rolls up in the ceiling - sounds good at first BUT I have this projector that hangs down from the ceiling and I can do NOTHING with my mantle except hang a picture - no big, fat candlesticks, or pretties up there at all - they will get in the way of the screen coming down. Hubby wanted to paint that wall silver and not even use a screen just like they used to when they had real "silver-screens!! YIKES!! Thankfully, I won that little battle!!
This gives me an idea for my own blog post in the near future - you think you've got it bad - huh??

Oh nikkicrumpet....your rooms are beautiful...does that count for anything..or make you feel better! We bought one of those flat tv's for the wall and it sat in our garage for the whole first year of its warranty...not even up on the wall using it! It's up now with no problems...thank goodness...hubby insisted on Sony...maybe your hubs should take my hubs shopping with him next time!!

I went on vacation 2 years ago and came home to hubby having put a crack in our old 36" behemothly heavy Sony. Long story, but we replaced it with a 42" Sony Bravia and could not be happier. Mounted on wall, then moved and now have it in a cabinet... would not trade it for the world. Worth every penny we paid for it. We have bought Sony TV's for as long as I can remember and never any problems. Sorry to hear that your hubby made a bad choice ... Size does not always matter, at least in the case of televisions. Sorry you got stuck with a crappy TV... not fun!

That really does stink about your t.v. The one in my husband's room has spider webs in it. you can see them through the screen. Love your blog!! Kristen

Too funny for us but so sad for you. I haven't had internet for 1-1/2 days and it cuts in and out. It's supposed to be fixed but I've been told that before so I feel your pain! Hopefully it will get better soon for us both!

If you get this far down on your fan list, give me a holler at linda@jollieprimitives.com ~ I've got something for you! (compliments of Angie at nanasboxblogspot.com hint hint)

Yeah that manly "I'm gonna buy a big electronic TOY" look strikes fear into my heart and a big fat tone to my voice...

Sorry it took me so long to get here. I had to scroll down past all of these COMMENTS!! I love it! We finally got smart and bought the extended warranty and we've actually had to use it twice. It paid for itself. Your galaxy is very romantic. Light some candles and get the wine!!

Oh, Nikki...you make me laugh so hard!!!! I seem to remember a few years ago having that same conversation with my hubby while standing in front of a line of the biggest televisions I have ever seen.....and the fast talking salesguy was NOT helping! I informed him for every inch of t.v. he wanted over 42", I was buying a new pair of shoes...In the end, he decided the 42" would be good enough...hehe! So sorry your t.v. is misbehaving...you could always make a cup of hot chocolate and pretend its snowing...

Love, Angie

Hi Nikki! I was so excited to see that you came by my blog. I can't believe all the RMS friends who are now a part of blogland. It's like the good old days. Your humor is a JOY! One thing though, for as long as I followed your decorating and wit I never DREAMED you were old enough to have grown kids! I had you pictured as a 20 something year old! I can relate to the big screen dilemma. Remember when all the decorating magazines suggested hiding the TV (13 inch or smaller) behind the closed doors of a very expensive imported French armoire? Ha.

One hundred and nine comments Nikki, Bloody Hell, I guess the stars have all been taken then or gone way up in price?? haha.
I love your TV Room, I am sorry about the TV going on the blink and about your hubby getting such a huge one in the first place, you are so funny. Kathy.
