ATTACK OF THE TOOL GIRL!

I have discovered over the past few years that paint is my friend. Paint can cover a multitude of sins and make ugly beautiful...or at least less ugly. I also have come to the startling conclusion that I like building and fixing things.

Except for "Home Goods"...Home Depot has become my favorite place to shop. Weird huh?? I've discovered however if you spend too much time inside this glorious big orange box, you will get an uncontrollable urge to buy power tools. Now my first power tools were pretty girlie...in fact if I could have found them in PINK I would have been in heaven. But I found a set that is pretty darn convenient...the whole thing sits right inside your junk drawer. This set included some screwdrivers, a hammer, a stud finder (calm down BJ not that kind of "stud") and a cordless drill that was made lightweight and smaller to fit a womans hand. Now that was all well and good...but I discovered it didn't give me enough ***POWER***. So after my first project or two I went and got me a BIG GIRL DRILL!

NOW THIS BABY HAS TORQUE! Give me a glue gun and a drill and there is no STOPPING ME!

One thing you will NOT find anywhere near my craft table/tool bench is a power saw. If I had one of these----->

I wouldn't have any of these

One of the coolest things about Home Depot is that when you buy any type of lumber from them....Those sweet orange-apron wearing critters will cut it for you to the exact size you want FREE OF CHARGE!

So if you'll indulge me, I would like to take you on a tour of things I've fixed with paint, built, or altered in some foolish way.....
One of the first projects I tackled was making these cornice boxes for my living room. It's a super easy project that only takes a drill and a staple gun. It helped me build some confidence to try other things.

I made this bench for our master bedroom. Another very simple project. I bought the legs on-line as well as the big yummy nail head trim. The total cost of this project including the fabric was about $150.00.

I made this headboard for my guestbedroom...plywood, masonite, egg & dart molding, and some nailhead trim. Another really simple project...and if I hadn't got so greedy and had to have the embroidered silk fabric it would have been a really inexpensive project too! With the fabric however this ended up costing somewhere around $150.00

In this same room I reupholstered a chair I bought at an auction for $30.00 or so...I just used the old fabric as a pattern. This was also an easy project except for the massive blood loss during the removal of the old upholstery tacks! And I bought the bedside table at a yard sale for $8.00 it was ugly beat up pine but all it needed was some black paint!

I made another headboardy sorta thingie for our other guestroom. This one was made with one of those cheap mirrors you hang on your door...I just took off the frame they had it in and I had a $6.00 mirror. Plywood, more egg & dart molding, and some iron scrolls I purchased on-line from a company that makes parts for wrought iron railings. The iron scrolls were only about $5.00 each...so this whole thing cost about $80.00.

This cabinet started out life as an oak computer center. I replaced the upper wood panels on the doors with chicken wire and then painted and distressed it. It's now in my guestbedroom and houses linens and some quilts my mom made.

This cabinet was natural pine..it was purchased for a different house years ago. It no longer fit in with any of my decor and I was going to yard-sale it. But a little bit of black paint and now it fits in just fine. It's currently sitting in our library until I can actually afford bookshelves someday.

If you need cheap wall art...here's the ticket. I bought black "dollar store" frames for $1 of course, and painted them green and distressed them. Then I cut the pictures of the flowers out of a magazine. Even up close they look pretty dang good for a total of $4

This yellow cabinet was originally a drop leaf secretary I bought at a yard sale for $10. The top drawer was busted so I removed two of them and put in shelves instead..then added the baskets. I removed the drop leaf because it was beyond repair...then painted and distressed it. The screen behind it is just 1 x 4 pine boards cut to look like fence posts. The hinges were originally shiny brass and I rusted them with a really cool paint technique. Total cost of the screen was $22.00

And finally....a bench I made out of a damaged cabinet that was supposed to go over a fridge. I bought the bun feet on-line and added a wood top. The sad little bench pad is my pitiful attempt at sewing...which is one of my NON-skills

Hi Nikki, First I would like to welcome you to blogland and second, thank you for finding my blog. Who would have thought we'd meet like this? LOL So many of the RMS ladies have moved here and it is a much friendlier place!
I enjoyed this post. You are the most creative lady on RMS. Your projects are so creative and inspirational.
I love the picture of the puppies on your sidebar.
I hope to see you more often and congratulations on your great foray into blogging.

A girl after my own heart! I am always making things and painting and distressing and I have several of my own power tools as well. My Dh owns a Shopsmith and as soon as I learn how to switch out tools on that and use each tool watch out! LOL When I wasa getting ready for the Country Sampler photo shoot, I walked around with paint and tools in my hands for weeks.

I love your home. If I was not so primitive, that's the decor I would have. We use the same colors though, just in different ways.

I hope the sun is shining on your side of MA. We are finally seeing blue skies. The weather this summer reminds me of when we lived in New Orleans! UGH!

Hi Nikki,

I just found your blog & got the biggest kick out of your tools. I'm amazed by all the big projects you've completed, guess I need to buy my own cordless drill set. (I seem to recall my DH buying a set for me, then I think my son borrowed it... I haven't seen it since!)

I love all your spaces on RMS & often drooled over the bedrooms.

Love the pooches!

Oh Nikki, thanks for checking in with me as I work on Karen's. So glad to see you've got your own blog up and going now - I love the flow, and the pictures of all of your spaces are just wonderful. Your style is really great. I'm about to climb into bed now, and get ready for a long day at the office followed by a long night at Karens. Part of me will be very glad when she gets here - the other part knows she's coming with boxes she'll need help carrying in and unpacking. Oye vay!

Nikki, I knew you were a talented and creative master decorator and master gardener, but I am in AWE of your prowess with POWER TOOLS ... and they're not "sissy" ones, either!

I loved seeing all your creativeness at work. Each and every one of your projects is a masterpiece and you've inspired me to run over to my friendly neighborhood Home Depot and stock up on some black paint, plywood, molding, and my very own POWER drill.

I think I need to start out with a "sissy" one, though, until I get the hang of it ... and then work up to a BIG GIRL one.

Oh, boy ... I can't wait! I wonder if they have PINK tool aprons in petite??

I've enjoyed your stories and pictures, Nikki, and I'm so glad you joined us in "blogland." It's nice to know that you are "just a click away."

I love doing this kind of stuff. I built my girls fabulous headboards and did a raised plaster stencil with the first initial on them--painted and distressed them. . .for $35 each! I lOVE them. This year I decided to tackle the bladed tools that scare me and I have used a chop saw and a circular saw while helping build my girls a treehouse. I have pictures of them on my home and garden blog.

sassy stephanie said...

I looooooove your kitchen!

So, you did all of this? The closest I can come to doing something like this is cutting the pics out of mags.

Lavender n Lattés said...

I wish I still had some time to do some of those things...I'm not quite as crafty as you, however, but I do love to try new things! I love your eye for design!

Preston said...

I wish I was good at that stuff but the only thing I'm crafty at is sarcasm. Actually, when I was 12 my parents bought me a workbench for Christmas, complete with tools and supplies. I NEVER IN MY WHOLE LIFE EVER EXHIBITED AN INTEREST IN BUILDING ANYTHING SHORT OF A GOOD PARAGRAPH, so I was stunned beyond belief that workbench. And then they were mad at me cause I never used it. Maybe if my Dad had taken the time to show me how to use the tools, I might (and I use might loosely) have been interested. But even at 12 I was a big old gay boy and unfortunately I don't think he knew how to do with that.

The Boss Lady said...

Wow, they are amazing projects. I'm a DIY girl too. My hubby is a manual arts teacher and will make some stuff for me, but often he's too busy so he's taught me a few things, I've taught myself a few others and I'm more than happy to try and tackle it myself. But I hate using power saws too. I've used one only a few times and they freak me out each time.

Well, now you went and done it. You have to be gotten rid of. Not only did you take George out of my life, you also sucked any ego I had left. Your so wickedly talented. I love seeing decor but yours goes beyond what you normally see. Is your real name Martha?

I too LOVE LOVE LOVE Home Depot, although I actually like Lowe's a tiny bit better....and I have asked for power tools for the last several Christmases. My dad is so proud!!! Alas, I have very little room to do projects in my tiny apartment, but the ideas still roll around unceasingly! Your projects are gorgeous, way to go!!!

Wow. You are so talented. All of your work looks so good. It makes me want to do something for my house, but I know it wouldn't look near as good.

I'm always complaining when I find my hubby's tools lying around the house. Maybe I should change my ways. You inspire me!!!

Everyone LOVES Home Depot, don't they? :)
I'm new to Blogspot and am thrilled to find such wonderfully creative gals like myself. I know I'll feel at home. Please feel free to stop over when you get the chance.
