All of the above comments were made on "Rate My Space" about my master bedroom. Now there were some really nice comments posted...in fact the majority were very sweet. But why is it we let the mean comments consume us...and assume the nice comments weren't sincere?

For those of you who have never experienced posting on "Rate My Space" take it from those of us who have. It can be painful and you need REALLY thick skin....oh and body armor, a shovel and some tranquilizers.

I finished my master bedroom after years of not knowing what direction I wanted to take. I was very excited and relieved when it was finally complete. After proudly posting it on RMS I started to doubt my choices and to wonder if I should re-think the whole thing.

Is it perfect? Heck no! Is it even remarkable? Nope...but it's mine...and I really tried hard to make it elegant, calming, and a nice place for my hubby and I to relax and unwind. So I've decided to try and get myself to a place where I don't let the negative opinions of others affect my happiness. It's not easy...and I slide back into that place of self-doubt often. But dwelling on the positive stuff and letting the negative slide off my back is a lot more healthy and it makes for a much sunnier day!

Nikki, when I first posted my living room (zebra rug) on RMS (only it was Rate My Room back them), someone told me that it looked like "someone threw up beige paint all over the room." It was such a shock to hear that, and it hurt almost like a punch in the stomach. Despite many kind comments, the "threw up beige" comment lingered in my mind. I tried and tried to add color to that room, but it didn't work. The room wouldn't allow it. The room knew what the knuckleheads didn't.

Your bedroom is absolutely beautiful--one of my all time favorites. ((hugs))

Hi Nikki! It's 11:30 and I can finally get on my computer! I shut my server off and didn't even know it then I proceeded to grumble all day that we have a lousy server!!lol Anyway DON'T YOU DARE CHANGE YOUR BEDROOM! I loved your bed and room the first time I saw it on RMS and I believe I told you so (igottadecorate). Jealousy brings out the nasties every time! Your home and style is beautiful! And I am adding your pet peeve to my 3rd list, I agree with that one too! Have a great weekend - Jeannette

Nikki, I think your room IS remarkable, and heck yes, I think it's perfect! (For me anyway!) I have coveted that Horchow bed of yours for way too long now. I think that this room is romantic and peaceful, whimsical and gender neutral. A place where anyone, anywhere would feel comfortable climbing into bed and napping the day away. Don't let comments like that keep you from feeling like you've done exceptional work, this my dear - is gorgeous, and pratically perfect in every way.

Obviously your detractors have NO taste whatsoever because this is one increadibly beautiful room! You show elegance and style, and its warm and welcoming. There isn't anything I don't love about it! I especially adore that sitting corner with the chair, side table, and lovely painting!

Some people on RMS are just so mean!

Back to your bedroom. There are some people that have no taste. alot of the rude comments come from people who do not have any spaces on there. Your room looks fabulous. They said some rude comments about my rooms, too. I can handle constructive critisim, but some were ruthless. love the room. very soft, calming and pretty. mishelle

Your room is gorgeous! Wouldn't you like to see the rooms of the people who left the ugly comments? You'd probably laugh at their rooms and think a lot less about their opinions. And really, would you want to invite people that mean into your home anyway?
The important thing is that you and your hubby love the room since you're the ones who live in it.

LOVE your room. Did the rude people have spaces of their own to show? Most times they don't. It's called jealousy. I know it hurts. I put some spaces up one time and was shaking as I uploaded the pictures I was so nervous. The remarks were mixed but the colors of the rooms didn't photograph well and someone said I should add more blue to the room to match the seats on the chairs. They are actually green. I rarely go on RMS anymore as so many people have spoiled it. It would be nice if you could only leave a comment if you have a space of your own. That way you could visit those negative people and see what kind of style they have. That would probably cause a little chuckle as you look at their spaces and see how talented they are. Twin

Oh my, Nikki! I'm shocked! Can you imagine how unhappy those particular posters must be? Seriously - how in the world do people with peace in their lives make comments such as those? I don't understand it... and to top it off, half of them couldn't spell (oh please let me have no misspelled words in this comment...), which only added to their seeming lack of intellect. I think you should practice your "tsk-tsk'ing" and your looks of pity, bc these people definitely need them. I'm all for an opinion that is different from my own, but these people are blithering idiots. (Btw, your room is incredible. My husband would think he'd died and gone to Heaven if I could make our room look like that.)

I thought this post was a joke. Then I was sick to realize that people actually left those real comments to you about your room??? NO WAY! I love your bedroom! It's what my bedroom aspires to be when it finally grows up and gets taste. :o)

By the way! I have been reading your blog all of TWO days and you inspired me! I was oohing and ahhing over all those fabulous things you made- BY YOURSELF- that I tempted fate (and my fingers) and used my husband's skill saw. Is that the kind where you pull it down to cut wood? I don't even know. lol Anyway, I MADE SOMETHING. Thanks for your inspiration. And sorry for the book in your comments. :o)

I absolutely love this room. It's a room that a man can relax in as well as a woman and it looks so peaceful and relaxing. I remember all too well some mean and spiteful comments left on my spaces too. Thank heavens we don't have a rating system in blogland! Isn't funny how the mean comments are the ones we remember from RMS bz they hurt us? I much prefer blogging bz I have found the people to be very kind and respectful. Once again, I love your rooms and may have to get some advice when it's time to redo ours! I sincerely mean that too!

I'm old (see first commenter). What was that 1st comment about!! Agism, burns me up!!

Your room is warm, comfortable, pleasing to the eye and drop dead gorgeous!

Some of those shows on HGTV don't have a clue when it comes to design and that's sad, because so many people rely on that network for style ideas and believe everything they see there is gospel!

I, too, worried about some of the comments on my "controlled clutter" rooms and then, something one of our dear bloggers said..
"Our homes are to be LOVED....
NEVER RATED" (sweet KIM, at DAISY COTTAGE). Since I read that, I thought, "What the hell am I doing...putting my rooms up for others to judge"...
I removed every one of my photos off RMs except one room left on there..sort of a night-light for some of my friends to get in touch with me. But, never...NEVER again will I put a room up for someone else to tell me if they like it or not. It is a really stupid concept as far as I can see!!

If those people made rude comments about this your master bedroom, it is CLEAR to all of us who see the eloquence of this room that they are "little" people.

And besides, that is why they make chocolate. . . for all the people who don't like vanilla! Personally, this room would be my choice and style of decorating. Not everyone has to like it. That is okay! But it is not okay to be rude!

I like your quote from Henry James. I will have to copy that and file it away.

Hey Nikki - I don't have time to read through all the comments, so this may be repetitious. Do you see the commonality running through those negative comments left on your beautiful bedroom space? Looks to me like someone with a lot of usernames. There was a post last week that looked similar. Can you spell J-E-A-L-O-U-S-Y?

You have been one of the nicest and kindest commenters on RMS, at least in my 6 months on there. You were one of the first who left a positive comment on so many posts, and people responded in kind to your spaces. There are evil people in the world who HATE nice people who they don't even know. It's sick! But please stop thinking about it! You give them power over you when you do.

I haven't had many truly hurtful comments left, but over two nights after I posted my Christmas space, it was downrated off the front page, to about page 20. I was stunned, and then I figured there was something else at work. Maybe the presence of my Nativity in the photos? Who knows.

But, sweetie, please try to focus on the positive. You bring to much joy to so many people!

You know what I think about all that RMS BS. It took me a very long time to get over my time there. I tried so hard to fight back for so long and stand up for people, but it took all my energy and in the end it didn't matter, because those trolls are still there and still causing issues.

RMS did three things for me... I met fabulous women there (like you), I learned how to take a picture (kinda) and I learned not to put my heart on the line. My home is my heart and no one can tell me what my heart wants anymore than they can tell me how to live my life.

Your room is gorgeous. Don't let anyone tell you differently :)

Nikki, I can't imagine a more serene, romantic, or elegant bedroom than yours ... and you just have to consider the source of those rude, insulting, and negative comments on RMS. They were obviously made by jealous, vindictive, mean-spirited, and just plain rude people who don't know perfection when they see it.

That's one reason I haven't posted anything on RMS since I started blogging. Like you said, one negative mean comment about one of my rooms totally wiped out the other nice ones.

I actually love this room! Not sure just what everyone's problem is. I think is has variation in shades of cream and tan and alos texture to interest the eye.

Also, I love the picture you have of the woman in the ballgown over the chair in teh sitting area. Do you mind sharing where you got it? I recently saw it in my grandmother's retirement home...they had some beautiful art on display there. Every time I walked by, I was drawn into it.

Thank you for the referral to this posting. I was able to find it easily. I absolutely LOVE your bedroom. Your bedding is a perfect example of what hubby and I have been trying to find, but haven't been able to. I think your bedroom looks elegant, serene, and simplistic with just the right amount of bling. I would love to know where you found your bedding. One of my favorite colors is chocolate brown, but given the size of our bedroom I cannot just do brown, I have to add the cream colors. I am so sorry you had to endure icky people at RMS - for this reason alone I have never had the courage to show any photos of my home on RMS. I think your room is beautiful and you should be proud! Yeah you're bedroom is pretty fantastic I think. This is the kind of space I'm looking for to unwind and relax.

We just bought our first house and when we painted I didn't plan anything out and just got pretty paint chips. My bedroom is gray...and for the longest time it felt like an institution. We rearranged the furniture and bought new curtains but I still don't love the color. I can't resolve myself to repaint it for at least another year though.

Why do I do that?

Hey, I know those broads who left the rude comments. I see them clustered outside the bowling alley in their plastic shoes wearing mint green stretch pants and t-shirts (with a glittery rose on them) that read "A Touch of Class."

Style mavens, every one of 'em.

You rock on, Nikkicrumpet, and remember that some people's taste is in their mouth. (I'd say where their manners are, but I'm too much of a lady...*snort*)

Happy SITS day, darlin'!!!! Your blog is truly fabulous!!!

XO

I disagree with you. I think it looks perfect and remarkable! I want a bedroom like that.

Mean people suck. Your room, however, does not. It's beautiful.

Jen - Queen of Poo said...

It looks remarkable to me! Of course, my bedroom is decorated in a sort of post-modern clutter ala mode style.

Seriously, though. If it makes you happy when you are in it, it's perfect!

Your room is beautiful! The people who say they don't like your room are the same people who say they don't like chocolate. They just don't count!
It's yours, it's finished, it's gorgeous - enjoy it!

Over from SITS - happy FB day!

Wonderful retreat - I found it soothing and comfy!

I'm sorry, but your bedroom IS perfect and wonderful and DON'T YOU TOUCH A THING IN IT! GORGEOUS!

All that matters is that YOU like it!!!

Happy SITS day!!!

Those rude commenters were smoking crack. Your room is fabulous!

I still can't believe how rude people can be... and you are seriously brave for going on there. I don't think I could.

Plus, I think a bedroom should speak to the person who sleeps there... if it's comforting and comfortable for that person... that's the MOST important feedback. I think you've done wonderfully, and it looks peaceful and comfortable for you... so it's perfect!

I think it'd be peaceful for me too... I may steal some ideas :)

It looks like a beautiful sanctuary to me! And BTW, I have that same portrait of a lady in my dining room and love it! I never tire of the lovely folds of her dress!

Fabulous. I love it. Candace Olson would approve!

I love this look! My mom is an interior decorator and she works hard to express the taste of the homeowner in all she does. If you're happy that's all that matters! Don't listen to those bullies! They're just jealous.

I don't know anything about design...but your bedroom is beautiful! It looks soooooo relaxing.

Emily said...

Ummm...your bedroom is only about 500% better than mine. It is so beautiful. I wish I could get the inspiration to put something that pretty together!

I think that some people tend to forget that just because something isn't necessarily "their style" doesn't mean it is "bad style."

P.S. After reading all three of your SITS posts, I have Honkey Tonk Badonkadonk firmly stuck in my head - I've never heard that song before and I'm cracking up!

Nina said...

Nikki you should have no doubt about your room. It is beautiful and I would die for a room that looks that nice. I live in a miss match mess.

Cass said...

I agree with the rest of the SITS, the room is great!!! I would love to have a room look that put together! Great blog!!

ChezChani said...

I think your bedroom is elegant and classic. I'm sure I would not put a room of mine on RMS as I don't need to know anyone else's opinion, they will never have to spend time there. And besides that, my space looks like a tornado just ran through it. Someday I'll buy furniture for my bedroom (maybe) and that will help.

Michelle said...

Here's my two cents.

Would that be how I decorated my master bedroom? No. Personally, I do like a little more color. Oh, and I wouldn't be able to put it all together like that anyway -- you don't want to see mine :)

But it's your room, and you've made it super comfortable for you. I think it looks beautiful. If, when you walk in there, you smile and you feel relaxed, then you've done exactly what you wanted and it's the perfect room for you. And that's all that matters. Enjoy it!

I love the room and I am not 'just being nice'. I simply love the light fixture and the painting over the chair. The bedding is wonderful too.

And I happen to love the color of the bedding.

Your bedroom is beautiful....and I am not just saying it. It should be on a magazine cover. The look of the room is very comfortable and inviting.

Ronnica said...

This is not just lip service: I really like your room. "Vanilla" sure, but vanilla is one of the greatest smells: all warm and inviting (so obviously I'm not using this in the "plain vanilla" sense). All the attention to detail and the plushness, it's so inviting and warm, perfect for a master bedroom. Bravo.

Jaina said...

Well I think it's absolutely beautiful!! So elegant and classy, very chic. Great work with this, I'm impressed.

Michelle said...

Look at it this way......the people who didn't have nice things to say don't share your same sense of style. Doesn't mean what you did wasn't beautiful and perfect for you.

Personally I would find your bedroom a very peaceful place to relax in. :)

Glad to know that you've moved beyond the tactlessness of others; I agree that the rooms looks very elegant & restful- things that a room for sleeping in should be :-)

EmmaP said...

i love your space. it looks comfy and cozy and a place i could totally relax in - which is what i would hope for in a bedroom. it is reminiscent of a really nice B&B or a spa resort. way to go!!!

Your Master bedroom is heavenly. It is classy and elegant and calming. That armchair is calling my name! I absolutely adore the picture above the armchair.

Susan said...

Your room is beautiful. Very elegant and warm. You should be very proud of your space - after all, you did do it yourself.

It is very beige. But what is wrong with that? Why does 'everyone' have a hate-on for beige? Okay, if your entire house was painted that one beige colour, had brown rugs, and brown furniture it might be a bit much. But this is YOUR retreat. And for heaven's sakes, it's a bedroom. Beige is calming and elegant!

I suppose you could try to appease them. Paint it hot red, have green velvet drapes and a yellow duvet, purple pillows, and for those who made 'vanilla romance' comments, a gold-gilded mirror on the cieling? :)

Don't sweat it. This is your room. It's elegant, a retreat from the day, a place to be calm. If that is how it feels for you, and what you want, then you've got a good match.

MammaDucky said...

People love to criticize when there is that veil of the internet. They would normally never say such things. I love your room. Very fancy. Now, could I have that room in my house? No, well, I could, but it would be beige with a lot of stains, he he he. If color is your thing, super, if neutrals are, great. To each his own. All that being said, I do have a bat and a shovel should you need it!

April Kennedy said...

Well, hopefully after today you feel very good about your decisions with your bedroom...look at the love you have gotten SITsta (and Sister as in LDS!). Your house looks amazing and finished and professionally decorated. Good job. I love your blog. I am glad you won! Woooohooooo!

Jaden Paige said...

I agree with all above... Although it is not what I personally would choose for myself, I still think it is BEAUTIFUL and elegant and classy. Screw those commenters, they wouldn't know good style if it whacked 'em upside the head with a phonebook :P

If it makes you and your hubby happy and relaxed, that is all that matters. BTW, I love those stylized photos you have at the bottom of your blog- so nice!

La Pixie said...

wow, that room is a dream! I would love to have it!!

it amazes me that someone would consider that "vanilla" because the details are so rich and amazing. I suppose if you cant appreciate the room, you might think it was vanilla, but that would have to be on the viewer.

Holly said...

Hey, your room totally rocks. And who cares what other people think anyway? You're the one who has to live there. :)

Anonymous said...

Oh I want that bedroom :) it is so cool...found your blog on SITS love it:)

Anonymous said...

The cool thing about your master bedroom is that it's YOUR MASTER BEDROOM, who cares what other's think. I like it, seems classy, clean and claming. Which is a lot better than mine. I think I have no decorating talent what's so ever.

Crazy Momma said...

Gosh, you can come tomy house anytime to redo my master bedroom...which is actually shared with a 6 year old wanderer (for safety reasons). Our biggest element of romance is the candle I got for my birthday...ugh!

Jenni said...

The thing I have learned about decorating is that everyone has different taste. You can never please everyone. You should please you. That is why I only decorate for me, I know what I want and don't have to do what other people want. It's much more fun that way.

Lavender n Lattés said...

I think the bedroom is great! I like the different things (old & new) that you mixed in together. Sometimes people like to be negative just to be negative and sometimes they are jealous. If you like it and your hubby likes it - then who cares what the rest think! Great job!

Nikki, your bedroom is DEFINITELY remarkable. It's beautiful and calming...think it would look as tranquil in my house with two little boys launching themselves off the bed and Hubs' dirty underwear lying next to the chair? :)

Esther said...

I was shocked when I read those comments and then scrolled down to see the pictures of your bedroom. Were they seeing the same pictures that I was seeing? How could anyone not like that room. It is BEAUTIFUL. I can't say more than that...I'm just speechless.

I say there is NO crisis here. Your bedroom is beautiful!!!!!

I think your bedroom is beautiful. The colors remind me of toasted marshmallows and chocolate - yummy (s'mores?). To me the colors say "warm & cozy." I also like all of the different layers of texture you used.

I can't believe someone wouldn't like it. Your master bedroom is so beautiful and grown up! It makes mine look like a college dorm, complete with road signs, milk crates, and traffic cones.

Don't let them bring you down!

I am a color person. And I love your bedroom. It is beautiful...and so well done. It's muted, but not boring. And it just looks like a soothing place to lay down your head.

Thank God clueless teenagers on the internet don't set adult fashion trends - we'd all go crazy in a matter of seconds. I think your bedroom is airy, spacious, and richly nuanced with color. I especially love the bedspread!
